Men's Golf Moves Up A Spot In Round Two Of OVC Championships

April 21, 2008

PADUCAH, Ky. --- The Samford men's golf team moved up to fifth place Monday in the second round of the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championships held at the Country Club of Paducah. The Bulldogs sat in a tie for sixth place Sunday evening after round one.

The Bulldogs shot 10 strokes better Monday with a team second round score of 315. Samford's two-day total is now 620, just seven strokes out of the top three.

"I really think we have a chance to move up if we play tomorrow like we did today," Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks said. `We had good play out of the Baird brothers today and it looks like good weather tomorrow, so hopefully we will have a good day."

The Baird brothers, Bobby and Tyler, join John Turnipseed in the top 20 after the second round. The freshman, Tyler, was tied for fifth after Sunday's round, jumped to third place early in the second round and ended the day at sixth place, shooting two rounds of 74 (148, +4). Senior John Turnipseed is currently tied for 11th place, shooting three strokes better than Sunday (78-75=153) while the junior, Bobby, is tied for 20th place, shooting 12-over (80-76 = 156). Ian Cutting and Martin Bunt round out the Samford five at 39th and 40th places, respectively.

Eastern Kentucky leads the field of teams but a mammoth margin of 26 strokes. They are shooting just four over par while Murray State trails at second place shooting 606 at +30. Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech come in at third and fourth places, respectively while Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Martin, Jacksonville State, Tennessee State and Morehead State round out the teams in sixth through tenth places.

Teams will tee off for the final round on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Following hole-by-hole live scoring on www.golfstat.com and look for a full recap on www.samfordsports.com at the conclusion of the final round.
